Amazon is about to go on a huge hiring spree, adding over 100,000 "full time, full-benefit" US jobs. They'll be available to people with "all types of experience, education and skill levels," the company wrote, ranging from engineers and software developers to entry-level fulfillment center positions. "Innovation is one of our guiding principles at Amazon, and it's created hundreds of thousands of American jobs," CEO Jeff Bezos said in a statement.
The company boasted that employees get "highly-competitive" salaries, along with health and disability insurance, retirement savings plans and company stock. It also offers 20 weeks of paid parenting leave, which can be shared with a spouse employed elsewhere. The company recently revealed that it pays male and female employees equally, and its diversity hiring is above average for the tech industry (which is to say, still not great).
Working at Amazon, both in executive and blue-collar positions, is famously difficult. Amazon has, in the past, also used a lot of contract labor to avoid paying benefits and other perks. Over the past few years, however, and with the latest hiring spree, the company seems to be shifting its workforce to more permanent positions -- even if employees work fewer hours.
We plan to add another 100,000 new Amazonians across the company over the next 18 months as we open new fulfillment centers, and continue to invent in areas like cloud technology, machine learning, and advanced logistics.
States that will benefit from the hiring spree include Washington, Texas, California and Kentucky, thanks to expansions, renovations and new construction of fulfillment centers. Amazon also said it would hire an additional 25,000 veterans and military spouses over the next five years, keeping an earlier promise. Along with fulfillment, Bezos said the company will expand in "cloud technology, machine learning and advanced logistics."
President-elect Donald Trump has threatened US companies that move jobs abroad with sanctions, but Amazon's hiring spree doesn't likely have anything to do with the new administration. Trump famously sniped at Amazon during the election, saying "Amazon is getting away with murder, tax-wise." Bezos replied in kind, saying Trump's lack of transparency (he still hasn't released his own tax returns) "erodes our democracy around the edges."
After a meeting with Trump and other tech leaders in December, including Tim Cook and Elon Musk, Bezos softened his tone, though. He said Trump's promised focus on innovation "would create a huge number of jobs across the whole country, in all sectors, not just tech."
Norway has started switching off FM transmitters today, becoming the first nation in the world to dump the 80-year-old standard. The changeover to Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) will give citizens more stations, better coverage, program time-shifting and more, the government says. However, the majority are against the changeover, according to a recent poll. "We are simply not ready for this yet," MP Ib Thompson told Reuters.
There are millions of radios in houses, summer homes and boats that will no longer work, and only a quarter of the nation's cars have DAB radio. Though much of Europe changed smoothly from analog to digital TV, most folks were able to get adapter boxes for under 25 euros ($30) or so. The same can't be said for FM -- it reportedly costs between 1,000 and 2,000 kroner ($120 - $230) for a DAB car radio adapter. "It's completely stupid, I don't need any more channels than I've already got," 72-year-old Eivind Sethov told the AFP in Oslo.
Norway has been prepping the switch for years, though, with DAB running alongside FM since 1995. (The US uses HD radio, which transmits both analogue and digital FM bands simultaneously.) Right now, there are 22 national digital stations, but only five can be packed into the analog FM bands. Switching to digital will also increase coverage and reduce transmission costs, as it is difficult and expensive to get FM signals into Norway's fjords and mountainous regions.

Nationally owned chain NRK will be the first to turn off its FM transmitters, with private stations following later in the year. Broadcasting chief Thor Gjermund Eriksen told Aftenposten that he's confident, but anticipates some early turmoil. "We expect a big rush," he said. With the gradual transition, though, Eriksen hopes that people will take action once they notice what's happening. "We believe that many people will be in touch when they discover that they have lost some of their NRK channels."
Other Euro countries will follow suit, depending on how it goes in Norway. Switzerland and Denmark have made a strong push for digital radio, and Britain says it may turn off FM once half of listeners are using digital formats. The UK recently launched "multiplex" digital stations, despite reported reception issues and other problems. While France and other nations aren't convinced, successful digital switchovers in neighboring countries might tip the scales there, too.
One area that hasn't been discussed much is the learning curve. First developed in the 1930s, FM radio is one of the last 20th century technologies to cede to the digital age. By switching to DAB, Norway is cutting off a large group of people, especially the elderly, from one of the few kinds of tech they know how to use. While the nation is one of the more technologically advanced in the world, the switchover may be the most difficult for those folks.

Без искреннего желания ничего не получится. Неважно, идет ли речь о желании месяцами валяться под пальмой на тропическом острове или активно путешествовать по миру — вы должны страстно этого хотеть. Для осуществления мечты предстоит делать то, что вы еще никогда не делали, и проявить немалую выдержку, поэтому без настоящей увлеченности не обойтись.
Возможно почти все. Звучит как позитивная установка Дейла Карнеги, но это действительно так. Можно путешествовать почти без денег (многие передвигаются автостопом, а бесплатный ночлег можно найти через Couchsurfing), можно колесить по миру с годовалым ребенком, обстоятельства неважны, главное — желание. Бросьте искать отговорки, которые всегда найдутся, загоритесь мечтой и сделайте ее реальностью.
Шаг второй: спланируйте маршрут
В интернете куча информации о маршрутах, странах, городах и достопримечательностях, которая поможет сориентироваться. Заранее выясните, нужна ли виза в те или иные страны, и если нужна — уточните список документов и размер сборов.
Учтите, что некоторые визы сложно получить безработным, так как западные страны зачастую просят справку с работы. Прислушайтесь к себе: чего вы больше хотите — ездить по недорогим странам в течение года или, к примеру, устроить двухмесячное путешествие по США? Важен ли для вас комфорт, или вы готовы спать в стоге сена? От этого зависит итоговая сумма, которую нужно накопить, и срок, через который вы сможете отправиться в путешествие.

Шаг третий: подсчитайте стоимость путешествия
Долгое путешествие не будет бесплатным в любом случае, даже если вы будете экономить и посещать не самые дорогие страны. Счастливым обладателям кредитов или ипотеки о такой поездке, скорее всего, стоит забыть, а всем остальным следует научиться планировать расходы и воспитать в себе элементарную финансовую дисциплину.
Заранее узнайте цены на проживание, еду, развлечения и дорогу до точки назначения. Обратите внимание, что ездить существенно дороже, чем осесть в теплом и симпатичном месте, ведь за проезд (если только вы не автостопер) нужно платить, а в странах Западной Европы и США с Австралией деньги тают значительно быстрее, чем в Восточной Европе и Азии. В любом случае, выбирая направление, в первую очередь подсчитайте расходы и обязательно добавьте к полученной сумме 10-20 процентов на непредвиденные расходы, которые, по нашему опыту, возникают всегда.
Шаг четвертый: начните откладывать деньги
Деньги на длинное путешествие нужно накопить, если только вы не сдаете квартиру на Кутузовском проспекте в Москве или богатая бабушка не оставила вам наследство. Сначала рассчитайте сумму, с которой вы можете расставаться раз в месяц, добавьте к ней любой другой доход, который у вас есть (например, премии). Если не уверены в строгости своей дисциплины, сразу после получения зарплаты относите деньги на вклад, который не предусматривает возможности частичного снятия без полного закрытия. Это важный момент: так у вас не будет соблазна залезть в накопленное.
И помните про кризисы: даже небольшие сбережения стоит держать в трех валютах примерно в равных пропорциях, а банки выбирать исходя из их надежности.

Немногие могут понять и поддержать решение бросить все нажитое и уехать куда глаза глядят. Большинству окружающих людей ремонт квартиры, покупка дачи или новой машины, а также еженедельный шопинг с кафе-ресторанами куда ближе, чем любые путешествия. А значит, ваша авантюра абсолютно точно вызовет непонимание.
О наших планах были осведомлены только ближайшие друзья и родственники, которые не донимали нас советами и всячески поддерживали. Но нам очень повезло, но может быть и по-другому. Принимайте всю информацию к сведению, при этом придерживайтесь своей линии.

Шаг шестой: продумайте, что будет происходить в ваше отсутствие
Есть множество вопросов, которые нужно решить до отъезда и которые могут возникнуть, пока вас нет дома. Например, мы блокируем домашний интернет, чтобы не платить за него, когда мы в поездке, в месяц путешествий платим уменьшенную квартплату (обратитесь в ЖЭК с сохраненными билетами из вашей поездки, и вам все объяснят). Также нужно, чтобы кто-то поливал цветы, заботился о вашем питомце, если он есть (мы своего кота отвозим родителям), и доставал почту из ящика, чтобы ваше отсутствие не было очевидным для квартирных воров.
Если у вас есть машина, а вы путешествуете не на ней, не оставлять ее у дома, лучше припаркуйте во дворе у знакомых. Отдайте им документы и ключи и попросите приглядывать. Пока нас не было, в Москве прошел ледяной дождь и весь двор завалило упавшими деревьями. Даже представить страшно, что бы случилось с нашей машиной и куда бы ее отвезли коммунальные службы, если бы мы заранее не переставили ее к друзьям.
Шаг седьмой: купите медстраховку и сделайте прививки
Болеть не любит никто, особенно в поездке. Если до этого в вашей жизни были только двухнедельные отпуска, а теперь вы едете далеко и надолго, шанс заболеть увеличивается, и нет ничего грустнее, чем болеть на чужбине. Обязательно изучите отзывы о работе страховых компаний и купите надежный полис с хорошим покрытием. Не экономьте, от этого может зависеть ваше здоровье и даже жизнь.
В некоторые страны Азии и Африки нужно еще до отъезда сделать прививки от разных заболеваний, подробно изучите информацию и обязательно вакцинируйтесь. С такими вещами не шутят, дело серьезное. В Москве в поликлинике №5 есть специальный кабинет, где москвичей вакцинируют совершенно бесплатно. В этом кабинете нам делали прививки от брюшного тифа и гепатита А, широко распространенных в Азии.

Шаг восьмой: думайте на несколько шагов вперед
Рано или поздно путешествие закончится, и если у вас нет удаленной работы, вам придется вернуться в офис. Как показывает практика, на поиск работы уходит некоторое время, поэтому стоит заранее подстелить соломку и накопить средства не только на путешествие своей мечты, но и на три-шесть месяцев скромной жизни после него. Скромная жизнь включает питание, оплату проезда на собеседования, покупку необходимой одежды и квартплату.
Шаг девятый: подготовьте список того, что нужно взять с собой
Лучше всего путешествовать по миру налегке, особенно если речь идет о теплых странах. Мы ездим с рюкзаками и не берем багажа, что обеспечивает большую мобильность. За прошедшие месяцы мы поняли, как мало вещей человеку действительно нужно для счастья. Рюкзаки должны быть приспособленными для долгих перемещений и иметь специальные лямки, которые снижают нагрузку на спину. При покупке не вздумайте экономить — это важнейшая вещь, и от нее во многом зависит комфорт путешествия. Возможно, следующий совет покажется очевидным, но лучше возьмите лекарства из дома — нужных вам медикаментов или их аналогов в экзотической стране может просто не оказаться.

Шаг десятый: подумайте о собственном развитии во время путешествия
Очень важно не приобретать привычку месяцами вести праздное существование и хотя бы по часу в день заниматься чем-то полезным и развивающим. Читайте хорошие книги, учите иностранные языки или осваивайте новые компьютерные программы. Мы ко всему прочему ведем блог, работа над которым вместе с организацией самих поездок занимает почти все свободное время. Сегодня мы уже в Улан-Уде. В ближайшее время нас ждет Монголия, Китай, Вьетнам, Камбоджа и Таиланд.

We hardly need more convincing of vinyl's resurgence over the past few years, but a report from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) today details that more records were sold in the UK in 2016 than have been for the past 25 years. Based on Official Charts Company data, over 3.2 million vinyls were purchased in 2016 -- a volume the BPI predicted early last year -- representing a 53 percent increase over 2015 and the highest total since 1991. The death of several music icons no doubt helped (for lack of a better word), with David Bowie's Blackstar being the best-selling vinyl of the year.
Prince's Purple Rain features in the top 10, too, but new releases also enjoyed success. Somewhat surprisingly, Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 was the third best-selling vinyl of the year. Other formats didn't fare so well in 2016. CD sales declined by over 10 percent, and downloads slipped even further, by almost 30 percent.
More people than ever are streaming music, as you'd probably expect. In fact, 45 billion audio streams were served in 2016, which is a mammoth 68 percent increase over the previous year -- and that doesn't even include YouTube data. And in December, more than 1 billion audio streams were served in a single week for the first time.
Even though streaming is becoming ever more popular, 2016 marked the ninth consecutive year of growth in vinyl sales. It probably doesn't hurt than you can now pick up a record on your emergency milk run. According to a study conducted last year by ICM Unlimited, though, 48 percent of vinyl buyers don't play their purchases and 7 percent don't even own a turntable -- suggesting that many consumers buy the format for its aesthetic and collector value, rather than the analogue sound.
