2019-03-08 16:59:27Elizabeth Warren pledges to break up Facebook, Google and Amazon
2019-03-08 16:12:24Today, Democratic presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren published a post on Medium in which she detailed why she wants to break up large Internet companies such as Facebook, Amazon and Google. In her post, she accuses these companies of using their vast resources to shape the playing field and buy up potential competition.
Warren has two proposals to counter the influence of these companies. First would be designating large tech platforms as "platform utilities." "These companies would be prohibited from owning both the platform utility and any participants on that platform," Warren says in the Medium post. Second, Warren proposes focusing on the reversal of tech mergers that she calls anti-competitive. The examples she provides are reversing Amazon's acquisition of Whole Foods and Facebook's purchase of Instagram, among others. These mergers and acquisitions, Warren posits, illegally undermined competition.
These changes would better allow small businesses to compete with Amazon by selling their goods on the company's marketplace, but without the fear that the company would drive them out of business. It would also encourage Facebook to respect its users' privacy, and would prevent Google from downranking competitors' search results.
All of this comes at a time when privacy is in the headlines on a daily basis and the Democratic field is wide open. Voters are looking to these potential candidates to see how they'll handle (or remain conspicuously silent) on the issues of these tech giants, which are increasingly dominating our everyday lives and internet experiences. As The New York Times notes, Bernie Sanders and Amy Klobuchar have both made comments about limiting these tech companies, while Kamala Harris has expressed privacy concerns but hasn't spoken on specifically curbing influence. Cory Booker, meanwhile, is more comfortable with these large tech companies.

2019-03-07 21:43:56Leica made a few waves with its original Q camera in 2015, and not without merit: the Q was a compact full-frame camera that took advantage of the company's reputation for high-quality lenses. You'll be glad to hear, then, that Leica is back with a full-fledged sequel. The just-unveiled Q2 borrows the same basic formula, including the non-removable 28mm f/1.7 prime lens, but gives you a much higher-resolution 47.3-megapixel sensor and, at last, 4K video capture. It's also billed as the only camera in its class (admittedly a rather small class) with dust and water resistance.
You can also expect some subtler additions. There's a new 3.68-megapixel OLED viewfinder that provides a more accurate representation of the final shot. And if raw speed is important, you might like both the 10 frames per second continuous shooting as well as an autofocusing time under 0.15 seconds. That's not the fastest lock-in time we've seen (Sony has something to say about that), but it's good for a camera like this.
Leica even makes use of its new sensor give you a form of zoom. The Q2 includes an option to crop the image to simulate common focal lengths like 35mm, 50mm or 75mm, letting you trade some detail for a tighter-looking shot. The original 28mm image is always available in case you'd prefer to see more.
The Q2 is on sale today, although it definitely won't be a trivial purchase with its $4,995 price tag. This might be worthwhile if you're a die-hard Leica enthusiast, though. While some Leicas are ultimately rebadged Panasonic cameras, the Q2 stands out -- it's a smaller and more stylish counterpart to a workhorse like Panasonic's S1R.

2019-03-07 21:43:00Airbnb is buying last-minute hotel booking service HotelTonight, in another move on the traditional hotel industry. The HotelTonight booking app and website, which offers day-of hotel reservations at discounted rates, will still operate independently, at least for now. Once the acquisition is completed, HotelTonight CEO Sam Shank will lead Airbnb's boutique hotel category.
"We started HotelTonight because we knew people wanted a better way to book an amazing hotel room on-demand, and we are excited to join forces with Airbnb to bring this service to guests around the world," said the HotelTonight CEO in a press release.
Airbnb says that the HotelTonight acquisition would help in its work to build an "end-to-end travel platform." In other words, Airbnb wants to become a site where people flock to for all their travel needs, not just vacation rentals. Airbnb began its ascent onto traditional hotels last year by more than doubling its number of boutique hotels, resorts, bed-and-breakfasts, and other accommodations.
The company, first launched in 2008, currently has more than 6 million property listings available across 81,000 cities and 191 countries. HotelTonight, founded in 2010, offers listings in over 1,700 cities in over 35 countries. Airbnb also plans to go public sometime this year and is likely building an even more attractive portfolio for investors with this acquisition.
Airbnb is dealing with backlash from cities who feel the impact of the service on both its native hotel industry and real-estate market. Cities like Tel Aviv, New York City, San Francisco, Austin, Los Angeles and Chicago are already charging higher municipal taxes for Airbnb renters or hosts. Other cities have banned Airbnb altogether.
Still, such struggles have done little to impact Airbnb's bottom line. Airbnb's market value has been estimated at $31 billion dollars, making it a close second to the world's most valuable hotel company, Marriott, which comes in at $39 billion dollars, according to the Australian Financial Review.

2019-03-07 15:47:10As promised, Tesla has unveiled the third version of Supercharging, the high-powered chargers that it has spread out to top off owners' batteries as they travel the country. The promise is that it will eventually bring down charging times by an average of 50 percent.
Peak rates go up to 250kW per car thanks to a new liquid-cooled cable design, and new stations don't have to split energy between multiple cars -- you'll always get the fastest rate available. On the most efficient vehicles, like a Model 3 Long Range, Tesla expects they'll get 75 miles of charge in 5 minutes, and add range at a rate of 1,000 miles per hour.
It claims that V3 Supercharging "enables our vehicles to charge faster than any other electric vehicle on the market today." That is, at least until vehicles supporting 350kW charging, like Porsche's Taycan and Audi's E-Tron SUV hit the market.
While it just opened the first "public beta" V3 Supercharger in Fremont, CA tonight, over the next few weeks it's bumping charge rates at the 12,000+ V2 Superchargers to 145kW from 120kW.
Not all of the changes are in the chargers either, as software updates rolling out to its cars (Model 3 first, then S and X), and a new feature called "On-Route Battery Warmup." When an owner navigates to a charging station, their car will make sure the battery is raised to an optimal temperature when they arrive which Tesla says can reduce average charge times by 25 percent.

Laundry Art
2019-03-06 19:08:54
With over 7 million inhabitants, Hong Kong is the fourth most densely populated region on our planet. It also has the most skyscrapers in the world, and its dizzying cityscape shows as much, demanding that we look up at the endless buildings grazing the sky. In Wing Ka Ho’s series Laundry Art, we are drawn back down to ground level, where freshly-laundered clothes are laid out to dry against the backdrop of towering buildings—humble reminders of the people living in this vertical concrete jungle. Since 2017, the photographer has wandered the city looking for a way to represent Hong Kong’s singular landscape, visualizing what it’s like to live in a metropolis. He eventually found his answer in one of the most banal and common of our daily endeavours: laundry.
Comparing his work to that of an urban archeologist of sorts, Ho’s simple observation is a powerful marker of the many ways the city is changing. Forming striking and sometimes surprising constructions, the improvised outdoor washing lines of Laundry Art speak of a shifting cityspace where private space is on the decline. “Now, as housing prices grow ever more expensive per square foot, when you live in the high-density places of Hong Kong, the space for drying clothes at home has become more and more narrow,” he explains. “As prices keep soaring in what is already the world’s most expensive property market, residents have been forced to squeeze into ever smaller apartments, leaving little room for washers and dryers.”
As a consequence of this urban-planning predicament, this domestic task has spilled out onto the streets of Hong Kong and created a phenomena of outdoor clothes-drying as residents take the matter into their own hands. “When we look at the laundry from a different perspective, we see citizens responding to their own needs and discovery, creating and utilizing the public spaces that belong to them,” Ho explains. “Some people hang their clothes lines by skillfully using ropes and lamp posts, or other ingenious ways of using the environment.” In the bedsheets draped over playground structures and the collection of shirts hanging off a wire fence, we see the traces of Hong Kong’s resilient inhabitants, forging their own ways of coping with the impact of a city-in-flux.
