French photographer and YouTuber Mathieu Stern is known for his look at rare, vintage glass, but his latest lens might just top it all. While on Iceland's famous "iceberg beach," Stern fulfilled his dream of shooting photos and videos with a lens made of ice.

"Shooting photos using an ice lens [has been] my dream for almost 2 years. After some research I saw that almost no one ever tried this crazy idea, mainly because it's hard as hell to find pure ice, and even harder to get a clear image," says Stern in the video's description. "So I had the choice to give up on my idea because it was too hard, or to just level up in the craziness [...] If it's hard to find pure ice in my city, maybe I should go where I could find some 10 000 year old pure ice — Iceland's famous iceberg beach."

The night before Stern and his friends were supposed to go to the beach, a "huge" storm went through and took all of the icebergs away from shore. So, they waited a few days and eventually went back three days later at 5am in the morning to get a chunk from one of the icebergs that had made its way to shore.

Stern says it took nearly six hours to create a single working ice lens, after four of them had broken inside of the housing. Every iteration, each of which took 45 minutes to make, was done so with the help of a Japanese cocktail ice ball maker, which Stern had hacked to form the piece of iceberg into a half-sphere.

The housing of the lens he created was 3D-printed, which held the continuously-melting piece of ice in place in front of Stern's camera. As you could imagine, shooting with the lens was less than ideal. The lens lasted only a minute or so after it was completed and trying to focus as it was melting proved to be a challenge.

According to Stern, no cameras were harmed in the making of the video. As to whether or not he was happy with the result, Stern says "This project is a scientific, artistic and poetic project — I never imagined the result would look like the photos that comes from an ultra modern lens, but I was amazed by the strange beauty of the images I made with the first ever 10,000 year old lens."

17 years ago today, then Apple CEO Steve Jobs stood on stage at the Apple Town Hall in Cupertino, California and showed off the very first iPod, a palm-sized device that held an entire music library and helped bring Apple back to profitability.

As Jobs introduced the first iPod, he called it a quantum leap forward in technology and outlined its three major breakthrough features: ultra-portability, Apple's legendary ease of use, and auto-sync with iTunes.

iPod is an MP3 music player, has CD quality music, and it plays all of the popular formats of open music. The biggest thing about iPod is that it holds a thousand songs. Now this is a quantum leap because for most people, it's their entire music library. This is huge.

How many times have you gone on the road with a CD player and said 'Oh God, I didn't bring the CD I wanted to listen to.' To have your whole music library with you at all times is a quantum leap in listening to music. The coolest thing about iPod is that your whole music library fits right in your pocket. Never before possible.

The first-generation iPod was advertised as the device that put "1,000 songs in your pocket," with the music stored on its 5GB 1.8-inch hard drive. Priced starting at $399, the first iPod lasted for 10 hours before needing to be recharged.

Apple's original iPod featured a black and white LCD and Apple's first click wheel, a simple, intuitive mechanical scrolling interface designed to let users quickly scroll through long lists of music.

The click wheel, which became an iconic feature of Apple's iPod lineup, included easy access buttons for playing, pausing, rewinding, and fast forwarding through music content.

Following the launch of the first iPod, new versions followed on a yearly basis.

Other notable updates included the iPod Photo in 2004, which had the first color display; the smaller iPod mini, which also came in 2004; the smaller and more portable iPod nano, introduced in 2005; the tiny iPod shuffle, even smaller than the nano, which came in 2005; the third-generation iPod nano "fatty" with a wider, squatter body, introduced in 2007; and the first iPod touch, also released in 2007.


Today, the iPod has been largely replaced with the iPhone, which was first introduced in 2007. Today's iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR feature music storage and Apple Music, along with messaging and calling capabilities, a full App Store, and so much more.

Apple retired the iPod nano and the iPod shuffle in July of 2017, and has slimmed down the iPod lineup to a single iPod -- the iPod touch. Apple has not updated the iPod touch since 2015, and it's likely that at some point, the entire iPod lineup may be put to rest for good.


It's not clear when that might happen, and for now, the iPod touch remains available for sale. It can be purchased from Apple for $199 for 32GB of storage or $299 for 128GB of storage.

Unfortunately, there have been no rumors of an update, so Apple's future plans for the iPod remain up in the air.

Stunning Weevil Eye Wins Forty-Fourth Annual Nikon Small World Competition

Nikon Instruments Inc. today announced the winners of the forty-fourth annual Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition. First place was awarded to Emirati photographer Yousef Al Habshi, who sees the eyes as the windows to stunning insect artwork and research. The 2018 winning image captures part of the compound eyes and surrounding greenish scales of an Asian Red Palm weevil. This type of Metapocyrtus subquadrulifer beetle is typically less than 11 mm (0.43 in) in size and is found in the Philippines.

Al Habshi captured the image using a reflected light technique and stacking of hundreds of images. The winning image is a compilation of more than 128 micrographs. According to Al Habshi, “the main challenge was to show the black body against the black background without overexposing the skin and scales.” He was able to strike the perfect balance by controlling the background distance from the subject and using deft lighting and sample positioning.

“Because of the variety of coloring and the lines that display in the eyes of insects, I feel like I’m photographing a collection of jewelry,” said Al Habshi. “Not all people appreciate small species, particularly insects. Through photomicrography we can find a whole new, beautiful world which hasn’t been seen before. It’s like discovering what lies under the Ocean’s surface.”

While beautiful to photograph, weevils present infestation problems world-wide and often destroy crops. Al Habshi’s photography has helped advance the work of his partner, Professor Claude Desplan, of New York University Abu Dhabi. His lab and Al Habshi’s photos have contributed a better understanding of the Red Palm Weevil and how to better control the population.

“The Nikon Small World competition is now in its 44th year, and every year we continue to be astounded by the winning images,” said Eric Flem, Communications Manager, Nikon Instruments. “Imaging and microscope technologies continue to develop and evolve to allow artists and scientists to capture scientific moments with remarkable clarity. Our first place this year illustrates that fact beautifully.”

Second place was awarded to Rogelio Moreno for his colorful photo of a Fern sorus, a clustered structure that produces and contains spores. The image was produced using image stacking and autoflorecence, which requires hitting the sorus with ultraviolet light. Each color represents a different maturity stage of each sporangium inside the sorus.

Saulius Gugis captured third place for his adorable spittlebug photo, captured using focus-stacking. This spittlebug can be seen in the process of making his “bubble house.” Spittlebugs produce the foam substance to hide from predators, insulate themselves from temperature fluctuations and to stay moist.

In addition to the top three winners, Nikon Small World recognized an additional 92 photos out over almost 2,500 entries from scientists and artists in 89 countries.

The 2018 judging panel included:

• Dr. Joseph Fetcho: Professor, Associate Chair of the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior at Cornell University.
• Dr. Tristan Ursell: Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and at the Institute of Molecular Biology at the University of Oregon.
• Adam Dunnakey: Broadcast journalist at CNN International.
• Jacob Templin: Senior video producer at Quartz.
• Eric Clark (Moderator): Research Coordinator and Applications Developer at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory at Florida State University.

1. Гопников- футболистов активно отмазывают. По тому же принципу, что и Серебренникова отмазывает интеллигенция: "они же лучшие...". Плюс, они же готовы заплатить за полученное удовольствие... Вряд ли ошибусь, если скажу: если они в суде не будут, по привычке, демонстративно презирать поганого судью и хамить ему не будут, максимум, что им грозит - условный годик-другой, о чем все немедленно забудут. Впрочем, возможно, не хамить - это выше их понимания: По словам Харламова, он видел, как спортсмены вели себя в суде, и если они продолжат вести себя подобным образом, то не исключено, что суд примет решение в виде реального лишения свободы. Даже не смешно.

2. По "накопленным" с 2013 года "успехам" Россия заняла почетное 98 место среди 100 обследованных стран. Не проверял, но похоже на правду. Ровно то же было в начале XX века с Российской империи, которая как замечают царепоклонники, "стремительно развивалась", да. Но только по сравнению с самой собой: окружающий мир развивался быстрее и отставание РИ от него нарастало еще стремительнее: к 1914 году уже и Африка подпирала. Причина? - Писал уже не раз. Либеральные экономисты категорически не понимают как в реальности устроена и работает капиталистическая экономика, которую они безуспешно, опираясь на учебники и глупейшие догмы Фридмена и Мизеса пытаются ИМИТИРОВАТЬ. Поэтому у них ничего не получилось, не получается и не получится.

Если в 90-е, несмотря на власовский флаг (можно было сообразить уже тогда, но до меня не дошло) была надежда на исправление ошибок позднего СССР - прежде всего в связи с единственным правильным действием либералов того времени: освобождением цен, что мгновенно, за несколько недель, ликвидировало позднесоветский дефицит всего, то сегодня надежды на просветление нет. Проблема в том, что в России сложились две команды невежд в экономике: одна - команда Кудрина, другая, условно, Глазьева. Обе они, пусть и разными путями, ведут Россию к экономической гибели. Вменяемых людей в экономике сегодня просто не видно даже и на горизонте. Все они понимают экономику на уровне предложения Медведева о сокращении часовых поясов, чтобы "сблизить Москву и Владивосток".

4. Совершенно вредоносна для будущего клерикализация России. Религия — это вздох угнетённой твари, сердце бессердечного мира, подобно тому как она — дух бездушных порядков. Религия есть опиум народа. Сам факт стремления навязать стране религию вместо образования, отражает прежде всего стремление власти навязать народу угнетение, бездушные порядки и бессердечный мир.

5. "Москва 2042" на наших глазах превращается из антиутопии или даже предвидения, в политическую программу российской власти.
