In the market for a whole lot of digital storage? Seagate has an announcement you’ll want to hear.

The Cupertino-based company announced today that it is now shipping the ‘world’s first’ 8TB hard drives surpassing the previous storage capacity limits in a single 3.5-inch hard disk drive. As the company mentions in their announcement, packing that much storage in a single drive allows data centers to be more efficient with data center rack space. Previously Seagate and the industry’s highest enterprise storage capacity 3.5 HDD’s reached 6TB in a single drive.

“Seagate’s new 8TB HDD provides IT managers with a new option for improving storage density in the data center, thus helping them to tackle one of the largest and fastest growing data categories within enterprise storage economically,” Scott Horn, Seagate’s VP of marketing said in a press release.

Seagate says its massive, new drives are shipping now to “select customers” and will be fully available toward the end of the year; pricing details were not yet made available.
