Isavia, Iceland’s national airport and air navigation service provider, estimates that 2.4 million foreign tourists will pass through Keflavík Airport this summer, making it the country’s largest year for foreign tourist arrivals.

According to Isavia, an average of 178 flights will be taking place per day across 28 airlines. The highest number of airlines recorded was 29 in 2018.

Grétar Már Garðarsson, Director of Airlines and Route Development at Isavia, comments, “We look forward to receiving even more visitors this summer. The passenger forecast assumes that over the summer months, April to October, the number of passengers will increase by 391 thousand, which is an increase of 7.2% year-on-year.”

The expected number of arrivals and departures at the airport is set to total over 37,000, which is 5% higher than in 2023 and 36% higher than at the same time in 2019.

Keflavík Airport is Iceland’s international airport, located roughly 50km from Iceland’s capital, Reykjavík.

Apple has revealed its commitment to a minimum of five years of iPhone security software updates from the date a device is launched, thanks to a new legal requirement in the United Kingdom (via Android Authority).


Earlier this year, the U.K. established new Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) regulations, which force companies that sell internet-capable products in the country to comply with certain security requirements.

One of the requirements of the PSTI is that companies define a support period, or minimum length of time, for which security updates will be provided after sale. A "security update" is defined by the regulation as a "software update that protects or enhances the security of a product, including a software update that addresses security issues which have been discovered by or reported to the manufacturer."

In compliance with the regulation, Apple has submitted a public regulatory filing for the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The PSTI filing shows that the device's "defined support period" is a "minimum five years from the first supply date." The "first supply date" is listed as "September 22, 2023," which is when the iPhone 15 series launched.

Unlike Samsung and Google, Apple is not usually explicit about its legacy software support for iPhone devices, so the five-year minimum should come as good news to Apple users holding onto older devices. However, as Android Authority notes, both Samsung and Google guarantee seven years of security updates as well as Android OS updates for their devices, which is two years longer than what Apple is guaranteeing here.

That said, Apple typically provides older devices with the latest security updates longer than the stated five-year period. For example, just this March Apple pushed a security update to iPhone 6s models, which launched in September 2015, or nine years ago.

Going back further, in November 2020, Apple released an update to patch major security issues for the ‌iPhone‌ 5S, which was released in 2013. That's seven years after the device went on sale. In other words, while the minimum-five year period is now set in stone, iPhone users can take comfort in the fact that Apple has a strong history of keeping legacy devices in the loop for several years longer.

Every once in a while, I see something travel-related that makes me cringe — people barefoot on planes, tourists with selfie sticks and, most recently, an influx of nonsensical and unnecessary words to describe different types of trips.

Enter: “sleepcation.” Seriously, it’s a thing. You’ll probably sigh as deeply as I did when I found out what it was.

Why do marketers insist on creating cutesy terms for things that already have names?

In fairness, a term like “glamping” (camping but with certain amenities that make it more glamorous) makes sense because it sounds like the original word: “camping.”

“Staycation” (when you take time off to stay home and do nothing or visit places nearby) also works because it rhymes with “vacation” — a word that, for decades, has sufficed to describe types of leisure travel that may or may not take you far away from home.

Now, it seems we have new jargon born from slapping “-cation” or “-moon” on the ends of words and calling them trends. Speaking of being born, don’t even get me started on “babymoon.” The whole thing is out of hand. In the infamous words of Regina George from “Mean Girls”: “Stop trying to make ‘fetch’ happen.”

Here’s a quick rundown of some of the made-up travel terms that give me, as the kids say, “the ick.”

What is a ‘babymoon’?

A babymoon is the trip an expecting couple takes to spend time together before their baby arrives (or, possibly, to mourn the loss of their free time, disposable income and privacy).

What is ‘bleisure’ travel?

The word itself comes from a combination of “business” and “leisure.” It indicates that you’re either tacking on a few days of paid time off onto a business trip or bringing non-colleagues — like friends or family members — with you for the ride. This has become increasingly prevalent as remote work has enabled longer trips than used to be standard.

What is a ‘buddymoon’?

A buddymoon is a honeymoon where friends tag along. To me, this just sounds like a weird way to say “honeymoon where you have no alone time whatsoever.”

What is a ‘digital nomad’?

A digital nomad is someone who can work from anywhere, including remote destinations, and changes locations frequently to do so. As long as they have a Wi-Fi connection and a host of electronics, they’re set to be on a constant workcation. (See below.)

What is a ‘sleepcation’?

A sleepcation is a vacation a person takes for the purpose of finding a good night’s sleep. Imagine paying money to accomplish what you should, in theory, be able to do at home in your bed. The concept is almost as ridiculous as the word itself.

What is a ‘travel curator’?

A travel curator is someone who travelers pay for customized travel planning services. Essentially, it’s a travel agent with a fancy name. Other aliases include “travel advisers” and “travel designers.”

What is ‘voluntourism’?

Voluntourism is traveling for the combination of both pleasure (tourism) and volunteer opportunities. It can include everything from medical and conservation work to teaching abroad. The term is silly, but the premise behind it is noble — as long as participants are actually helping, that is.

What is a ‘workcation’?

Although similar to bleisure travel, a workcation is different in that the travel isn’t for business purposes. It’s for pleasure, but you work while you’re there. A workcation can be something you take as a one-off or, if you’re a digital nomad (see above), something almost constant or indefinite.

Bottom line

Some of these terms have been adopted more widely into the travel vernacular; others struggle to take hold. What they all have in common, though, is that they were coined by marketers trying to generate buzz around certain types of trips or to make things sound fancier than they are.

But remember: These trips aren’t necessarily what everyone makes them out to be simply because they have their own made-up words. Moving forward, just call them vacations.

American Airlines is canceling changes that it planned to make to its booking experience, which would have seen some passengers become ineligible for earning miles or Loyalty Points.

Under the originally planned changes, passengers on American would only earn frequent flyer miles and Loyalty Points, or credits for elite status on the airline, if they had booked their ticket either directly with the airline or through one of its preferred channels. A variety of third-party booking platforms would have potentially been excluded, including some corporate travel-booking portals.

Speaking at a Bernstein financial conference Wednesday, American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said that the airline was scrapping the plan as part of a broader effort to pull back on its recent distribution strategy. That strategy was meant to encourage customers to book directly with the airline, meaning the carrier would not have to share a cut with a travel agent or booking service.

However, Isom said, the broader strategy, along with the specific tactic of restricting mileage earning, were creating confusion which has driven customers to book flights with rival airlines.

“That’s off — we’re not doing that because it would create confusion and disruption for our end customer,” Isom said. “We need to work closely with our agencies and partners to ensure that the transition that we’re making is not disruptive to our end customers.”

“We know that NDC [New Distribution Capability], modern retailing, provides a better experience for the customer,” he added, referring to new distribution tools available when passengers book directly with the airline or with certain preferred partners. “We know that we will get there over time. We have to go about it differently.”

The changes to mileage and elite status earning were originally slated to go into effect May 1, but had already been pushed back to July 11.

Loyalty basics: Best ways to earn airline miles 

The pivot in strategy — which is likely welcome news to American flyers, particularly those who travel for work and book tickets through a corporate platform — comes less than a day after American unexpectedly announced the departure of Chief Commercial Officer Vasu Raja. American also lowered its financial outlook for the second quarter Tuesday, saying it now expects unit revenues to decline as much as 6% compared to the same quarter last year. It previously projected a drop of up to 3% compared to last year. The airline said it would cut capacity growth in the latter part of this year.

Raja was a major driver of the airline’s new distribution strategy, along with other strategies that have produced disappointing results for the airline, like reducing long-haul flying in favor of booking passengers on codeshare partners, along with the airline’s network strategy focusing on the so-called Sun Belt, broadly lining the southern third of the United States at the expense of its northern and coastal hubs.

On Wednesday, Isom recommitted to the Sun Belt strategy, however, even as the airline’s shares fell more than 15% following the opening bell.

“I haven’t seen anything that suggests the Sun Belt cities aren’t going to continue to be a real economic engine in the United States,” Isom said. “Our regional network is so important,” he added, referring to criticism that the airline has sacrificed some of its broader network in the interest of servicing the Sun Belt hubs.

“When you take a look at that region, our unit revenue performance has been down considerably, but it’s not something that we’re going to abandon,” Isom added. “We’re going to make sure that we’re there when the [air travel market] dynamics change.”

"Они выглядят смешно"

В делийском метро мне пришлось допытываться у пассажиров, в какую сторону сесть на поезд: названия станций были написаны на хинди, санкскритом. В прошлом году на уровне премьер-министра и вовсе велись серьёзные дискуссии, что надо публично отказаться от британского названия страны - "Индия", и вернуть ей историческое имя - "Бхарат". Копья ломаются, споры кипят, а английский остаётся на своём месте. Уличные указатели дублированы на нём, рекламные щиты - тоже, меню в кафе на "колонизаторском", самые влиятельные газеты - англоязычные. На английском можно вести документацию любого предприятия, составлять контракты и договоры без перевода на хинди. Каждый гражданин имеет полное право обратиться с запросом в министерство на английском языке и получить на нём ответ (попробуйте подать такой запрос на русском в Прибалтике и на Украине). Также английский является официальным языком судебной системы Индии. Как заметил один из радикалов, "английский, по сути, остаётся единственным национальным языком индийцев, на котором могут общаться все населяющие страну народы. Это горькая правда - нам вряд ли удастся что-то исправить".

Хотя бы ради "понтов"

... В то же время "словами из Лондона" изъясняются далеко не все индийцы. По статистике на отличном уровне их освоили лишь 12% населения Индии, а в целом английским неплохо владеет 30% граждан. Остальные выучили набор из пары десятков фраз, ключевые выражения, числительные. Особенно это заметно в маленьких городках, а уж в деревнях-то и подавно. Остановившись в индийской глуши, мне приходилось включать электронный перевод из поисковой системы "Гугл" - английский крестьяне не понимали. А вот среди богатых семей английский очень популярен, и я часто видел в кафе, как хорошо одетые индийцы ради "понтов" говорили друг с другом на английском. Среди интеллигенции владение языком бывшей метрополии считается престижным, не знать английского - позор. Преподавание на английском в школах и университетах улучшилось, и я спокойно задаю вопрос человеку студенческого возраста в Индии, зная, что он меня поймёт. "За 76 лет независимости Индии изменилось восприятие, - объясняет мне учитель Фернанду Коимбра из штата Гоа. - Сначала английский считался языком оккупантов и палачей индийского народа, уговорить всех его забыть было важной задачей. Спустя годы английский ассоциируется с успехом, хорошими возможностями, отсутствием проблем в путешествиях. Если индиец поедет в соседнее государство, каким образом он там будет общаться? Знаешь, я откровенно ржу над попытками извести русский язык в отдельных государствах экс-СССР. Местные политики идиоты. Отказаться от русского - значит просто убить самого себя. Ты лишаешь своих граждан великой русской культуры, поэзии, кино, поездок в другие страны. На каком языке грузин будет общаться в Армении, литовец в Латвии, а таджик в Узбекистане? Я изрядно поездил по СССР и видел, сколько русские построили в национальных республиках заводов и фабрик, школ, больниц, как они помогали населению, развивали образование, литературу, искусство. Англичане и на грамм нам не помогли. И даже при всей ненависти к британцам английский язык остался в Индии. Убирая русский язык из школ, националисты в экс-СССР наказывают своих же детей.

... Самое забавное, что английский в Индии считается "языком белых", то есть, подразумевается - на нём говорят все европейцы. Но когда обращаются к русским, французам, испанцам, и те отвечают на своём, индийцы прямо-таки страшно теряются. Английскому языку в Индии не помешало ни тяжёлое колониальное наследие, ни 76 лет независимости: он лишь стал распространённее во всех сферах жизни. Я уверен, что попытки вытеснить русский язык и культуру у отдельных наших соседей ни к чему хорошему не приведут. Правда, чтобы понять очевидное, нужно хоть немного ума. У индийцев он есть, а вот кое-где с ним имеются проблемы.

There’s another Matrix movie in the works. Warner Bros. just greenlit a fifth installment of the saga, as reported by Deadline. However, neither Lana Wachowski or Lilly Wachowski will be handling directing duties. That honor falls to Drew Goddard, who adapted The Martian into a screenplay and directed the criminally underrated Cabin in the Woods. He's also writing the script. 

Goddard cut his teeth writing episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Lost, among others — you could say he knows his way around genre content. Lana Wachowski will be on board as an executive producer, so there will be some input from one of the franchise’s original creators.

There’s no word as to what the film will be about, but Warner Bros. says that Goddard came to the company with a “new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world.” Goddard added that the original films inspire him on a daily basis and that he is “beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories” in that world.

Warner Bros. is also being cagey as to which, if any, cast members would be returning. The original trilogy featured Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving and Jada Pinkett Smith. Most of these actors returned for 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections, with one story-based exception.

Speaking of The Matrix Resurrections, it received mixed reviews from both critics and audiences. We loved the film, going as far as to call it brilliant, but admitted that it wasn’t for everyone. That’s par for the course with this franchise. Every single Matrix movie beyond the first one is divisive. We’ll have to wait and see what Goddard brings to the table.

He’s also writing a film adaptation based on another novel by The Martian scribe Andy Weir. Project Hail Mary will be directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and will star Ryan Gosling as an astronaut trying to save the planet from a star-eating microbe.

In late 2023, American Airlines AAdvantage announced that credit card spending would earn Loyalty Points based on purchase date.

But after the most recent AAdvantage elite status qualification year ended Feb. 29, there’s been a lot of consternation from American Airlines flyers (including me). Facebook groups have been full of confused AAdvantage members who are wondering why they received base miles from their credit card spending this month but not Loyalty Points.

As you can see from the screenshot below, I earned more than 10,000 base miles on my most recent Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® (see rates and fees) statement. But notice the big zero under Loyalty Points.

This is what the activity tracker usually looks like when my AAdvantage credit card spending posts.

So, where are the Loyalty Points? They are coming — despite what my statement currently shows.

American Airlines has this banner on its website under the account information overview. The carrier also gave frequent flyers a formal notice via email that had the same language (though I never received that email).

It’s unclear why the Loyalty Points had to be posted separately this time. To shed some light on the situation, we reached out to American Airlines to learn more.

According to a carrier spokesperson, “To ensure all AAdvantage members get their miles and Loyalty Points deposited correctly and in a timely manner, this year the process entailed several separate actions. All Loyalty Points earned in February will be posted in March, and all Loyalty Points earned in March will be posted in April. The process results in more members earning status and Loyalty Point Rewards. As the new program year ramps up, we look forward to our members unlocking Loyalty Point Rewards and status toward an even better travel experience.”

I imagine splitting the Loyalty Points into two different status years was no small IT task.

For additional insight, you’ll find the following explainer on how March statements work on the American Airlines website:

As an example, if your monthly AAdvantage® credit card statement closes on March 5 (which includes purchases posted to your credit card account between February 6 and March 5), all the Loyalty Points earned from purchases made between February 6 through 29 will count toward 2024 status. All Loyalty Points earned between March 1 and 5 count toward the 2025 qualification year.

It may take up to 8 – 10 weeks after March 5 to post to your account in this example.

In other words, all your Loyalty Points earned until Feb. 29, 2024, count toward reaching status for the previous qualification year and all the Loyalty Points earned beginning March 1, 2024, will count for the current qualification year.

I assume that all my Loyalty Points for the previous qualification year (which ended Feb. 29, 2024) will eventually show up in the tracker at the top of my account overview (as you can see below), but that raises additional questions that we don’t have answers for yet.

As you can see, I earned 240,479 Loyalty Points in the previous qualification year, but I’m still confused about how many of the 10,431 Loyalty Points I earned on my most recent credit card statement will go toward my previous qualification year. I’m so close to 250,000 Loyalty Points for the previous qualification year that it would unlock two more rewards if I made it.

Will I get two more systemwide upgrade certificates, the same perk I chose when I reached 175,000 Loyalty Points and earned AAdvantage Executive Platinum status? Only time will tell. It would be lovely to get two more.

Another wrinkle to consider is that frequent flyers must choose their Loyalty Point Rewards by April 5, 2024. So what happens if the Loyalty Points don’t post by then? Having them appear eight to 10 weeks from now would be well past the April 5 deadline, so I’d seemingly be out of luck.

There’s some speculation that you may have to call customer service for assistance in choosing your award if the Loyalty Points don’t post before the April 5 deadline to choose awards. If we find out more about this from American Airlines, we’ll be sure to let you know.

No matter what happens, remember to make any outstanding Loyalty Point Rewards choices that may be waiting in your account.

A study found that 35 major US companies paid their top five executives more than they paid in federal income taxes between 2018 and 2022, the Guardian reports. The findings, which come from The Institute for Policy Studies and Americans for Tax Fairness, are even less shocking when you learn the worst offender: Tesla.

Elon Musk's company earned $4.4 billion during those five years and gave its executives $2.5 billion. Despite that, Tesla not only didn't pay any federal taxes, but it received $1 million in refunds from the government. Musk himself is the second richest person in the world, with Forbes reporting he had a net worth of $207.9 billion at the start of March.

Tesla is one of 35 companies that paid less federal income tax than they paid their top five executives during that period. In total, the well-deserving and not-at-all greedy execs of these companies raked in $9.5 billion over these years, while cumulatively those same companies received $1.8 billion back from the government. Eighteen of these businesses reported net profits over the five years but didn't pay a cent of federal income tax. (All but one got refunds).

The study lists other notable companies like T-Mobile, Netflix, Ford Motor and Match Group alongside Tesla. T-Mobile made $17.9 billion, paid executives $675 million and received $80 million in refunds. The mobile provider has spent an incredible amount of money on lobbying Congress for tax breaks, spending $9 million in 2022 alone. Netflix actually did pay some taxes, but the $236 million was just 1.6 percent of its $15.1 billion in earnings — and just over a third of what it paid those top five executives. The statutory rate for federal income tax is 21 percent, so yeah, feel free to scream.

Data intelligence software provider Alation on Monday added a new feature, dubbed business lineage, to its Data Lineage product to help business users track data flow across enterprise systems.

“Business lineage is an extension of Alation’s end-to-end data lineage, providing an abstraction layer to filter views of data flows and visualize relationships across technical, system, and business metadata,” the company said in a statement, adding that this visibility increases trust in data and accelerates time to insights for decision-making.

Explaining further, the company said that enterprises generally have to face the challenge of increasing the number of data sources, especially in the wake of technologies such as AI and generative AI — which requires combining all enterprise data.
